A recent study done by BSIA (British Security Industry Association) showed that there are between 4 million and 5.9 million CCTV cameras within the UK. These estimates come from information collected in over 200 sectors, including sewage systems, local shops, and schools.  This study includes both public-facing and personal cameras. As businesses grow and the population increases – more and more private sectors are taking the initiative by buying CCTV cameras to guard their premises.

A network of about 1.8 million CCTV cameras is watched within the United Kingdom, most of them by private companies.

According to Deputy Chief Constable Graeme Gerrard, this equates to around 1 camera for every 32 citizens.

In London alone, 500,000 of these CCTV surveillance cameras are in operation.

The London Underground Network has almost 15,600 CCTV cameras in operation.

Cameras catch the standard Brit almost 70 times each day. (not 300 times which was mention in a recent media report).

The UK spends an estimated £2.2 Billion per annum on CCTV and other surveillance camera technology.

95% of Scotland Yard murder cases used CCTV footage as evidence in 2009.

According to a news report from The Independent, CCTV cameras help to solve one in every 1000 crimes.

The public supports CCTV with 62% of citizens saying they want to see more surveillance cameras inside their local area.
